A Veteran's Story

As his father before him, Vance Roper had always believed serving his country to be an honorable career. This was a way of life he'd dreamed of since childhood.

After graduating from high school at the age of 17, Vance enlisted in the United States Army. Following boot camp at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Vance attended airborne school, as well as several advanced training courses. Vance served in many units during his army career including the 18th Airborne Corps and the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade.

As an Army intelligence analyst focusing on counter-terrorism, Vance was deployed overseas several times. During the Iraq War, Vance was caught in an explosion that left him unconscious with a massive skull fracture. After several weeks of hospitalization and rehabilitation he returned to full duty.

Vance worked for nearly a year with no reminders of the traumatic explosion he'd experienced until he suffered his first grand mal seizure. The event caused his heart to suddenly stop and left him with temporary amnesia. Following a definitive diagnosis of epilepsy Vance was medically separated and honorably discharged from the Army. This marked the end of, what he hoped would be, a lifelong military career.

After his military career ended, Vance tried his hand at several jobs. Because of his disability, things were not going as hoped. At wits end, he turned to the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs vocational rehabilitation program for help. Vance and his counselors determined that he was a teacher at heart and following several years of college, teaching was close at hand. Unfortunately a seizure in front of a classroom of students derailed his new vocation. Teachers who had seizures were not considered acceptable.

Not to be deterred, Vance went back to the drawing board and back to the vocational rehabilitation program. He knew he had what it would take to be successful - a confidence he gained from years in the Army. Combining his IT and marketing skills, along with his military background and knowledge of government contracting - Oceanus Group became a reality. As he currently oversees several successful contracts in the government sector, Vance is living his dream. As a highly competent, SBA Certified 8(a) SDB, and a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business - Oceanus Group is poised for a future of dramatic growth and great success.
